The process of researching and formulating the method of ultrasonic examination by the University of Michigan researcher Dr Floyd Firestone in 1940, was patented the first practical ultrasonic test, with the theme "Defect Check and Detectors".
In fact, the applications of weld flaw ultrasound inspection are the oldest and most common is the flaw inspection technique.
Since 1940, the laws of physics about the transmission of sound waves within solid materials have been used to obtain the results of internal weld defects such as voids, cracks, air pitting,…. in metals, ceramics, and plastics. The advantage of using the weld flaw ultrasound inspection is that it does not have to destroy the object's surface and ensures safety when checking.
It is possible to predict the high frequency sound waves reflected from the defect, the results of pulses displayed and recorded on the weld flaw ultrasonic device.
Welding defect testing methods are established in industry: machining, service, fabrication, or in applications involving welding and structural metals.
Below will be some theoretical conceptual indicators in weld defect tester.
The concept of sound waves is vibrations traveling through a solid, liquid, or gas medium. Different media will give different specific velocities, to the interface from the other medium, sound waves will reflect or pass through according to certain rules.
Frequency concept: sound waves vibrate with their own frequency or periodic vibrations per second. Defect detection applications are performed with frequencies from 500 KHz to 10 MHz.
The concept of velocity: of a sound wave changes according to the medium through which it travels, influenced by the density and elastic properties of the medium. Different waveforms travel at different speeds.
Wavelength: Any wave has a wavelength, which is understood as the distance between any two corresponding points in the wave cycle as it passes through the medium.
